Deep in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, our two twinkle-eyed children pleaded for a Christmas tree. Our son wanted one “as big as Lake Superior,” and our daughter was fixated on decorating it with lights. The room configuration in our tiny house made it difficult to consider, so we improvised.

Sited on the small hillside in front of our tiny house was the perfect pine tree with lush green needles and a welcoming orientation towards the lake. Our kids agreed that this would be our Christmas tree. My husband put on the lights with hurried care while I distracted the kids. Once the sun started to dip below the lake’s horizon, we counted down from 10 and marveled at the incredible sight before us. There was something so organic and beautiful about this tree, our tree. The expansive windows in our tiny house made it seem like it’s landscape was a part of our home.

Chequamegon Bay was quiet that evening but the laughter of our children filled the silence. Our decorated Christmas tree was the highlight of our holiday and a symbol that many times, less can be more.
